Chelsea forward Alvaro Morata has rejected suggestions that he rejected the opportunity to sign for Tottenham due to the presence of Harry Kane. The England international has been able to dominate the scoring charts this season, and he set a new Premier league record by coming up with 39 goals for the calendar year. As a result, he has been able to break a record that has stood for 22 years. Alan Shearer previously set the record with 37 goals in a calendar year. Kane continues to be the dominant force in the Premier league when it comes to scoring, but Alvaro Morata has had a strong start as well.

The Spaniard was signed from Real Madrid for £ 70 million and Chelsea were not the only club interested in securing his services. He was linked with the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham before making the move to Stamford Bridge. Speaking ahead of the weekend’s match, the striker rejected suggestions that he did not want to play second fiddle to Harry Kane. The rumours linking him with Tottenham only stayed as the rumours, as Spurs did not come in with an official offer. Since making the switch to West London, Morata has come up with 10 league goals – including the winner in the recent game against Brighton.

“No it’s [Spurs interest] not true. I spoke with him and he said he wanted both [of us] to play together, but there was no chance to come to Tottenham. For sure I would like to play with Kane, he’s a big player, one of the best strikers in the world, but in this moment when I spoke with him (Pochettino) there was no chance to leave Real Madrid,” said Morata, who is only behind the likes of Harry Kane, Mohamed Salah, and Raheem Sterling in terms of scoring charts this season.
